On April 18 April 2559 H.E. Kriangsak Kittichaisaree, Ambassador of Thailand to the Russian Federation, led the Team Thailand in Russia to visit Nizhny Novgorov, which is the fifth largest industrial region in Russia.

The Ambassador, Professor Boris Chicalev, rector of the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod (LUNN), and Professor Dr. Somkid Lertpaitoon, rector of Thammasat University, jointly opened the Centre of Thai Language and Culture at LUNN. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the local government, students, teachers and the Russian media, totalling over 300 in number.

The Centre is the fourth Thai Centre in Russia where the Thai language and culture are taught. LUNN has recently exchanged personnel with Thammasat University, and at present there are one teacher from Thammasat University teaching the Thai language and 7 students studying the language. The opening of the Centre helps strengthening people-to-people contact by enhancing knowledge and disseminating appreciation of Thainess among the people in Nizhny Novgorods region, and commences the celebration of 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2017.

Subsequently, H.E. Kriangsak Kittichaisaree met with Mr. Igor Karnilin, Mayor of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, and representatives of the International Office of the local government, to discuss the possibility of expanding economic, trade, and tourism cooperation, especially in preparation for the FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia in 2018 when the city is one of the venues for the tournament. In the afternoon, the delegation met with representatives of the department of trade and investment of local government and of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in order to explore trade and investment opportunities in the region. During the meeting at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the delegation discussed with the private sector and explored a possibility to promote Thai restaurants in the region as new tourist attractions. Nizhny Novgorod businessmen are invited to participate in the Thaifex held on 25 -29 May 2016 in Bangkok.
